There were only three days until Christmas vacation, and Emily still didn’t know what she was going to do when that final bell rang. She’d been waiting for James to give her some idea as to what he wanted or expected her to do. But he’d been acting as though Christmas was still months away.

Emily’s mother, of course, wanted her to come home for a week. Emily was fine with that idea, but was she supposed to invite James? She was terrified to ask, worried he might just say, “Why would I go home to meet your parents? We’re just friends, you know.” The truth was, she didn’t know. She had no idea. She and James were two people who went out once a week and occasionally shared a kiss on the cheek. Of course she had feelings for him beyond that, but she didn’t know for sure if he reciprocated those feelings. She assumed he did because he kept asking her out for meals. But maybe the man just really liked going to restaurants and needed an excuse.

She didn’t know. But she also liked him enough to keep going along with the pattern. An almost-relationship with him was better than a relationship with someone else. She really liked him. She liked the way he made her feel when she was around him—safe, giddy, and hopeful. But he also infuriated her with the way he seemed content with the way things were.

So, Emily refused to answer her mother, as James refused to answer the question Emily refused to ask. It was the world’s strangest standoff.

On Friday morning, she gave up and emailed her mother that yes, she would be home that evening. Then she called James’s answering machine: “Hey, I’m catching the last ferry today. Was wondering if we could meet up before we go. I have something for you.” She had bought him a hand-sewn pillow, with a picture of a fishing vessel and Mark 4:39 embroidered on it.

When she went to the restroom during lunch, Julie flagged her down with his reply: “I’ll meet you in the ferry line.” She wasn’t even sure why, but this response annoyed her.

It didn’t take her long to pack. She threw all her clothes into a suitcase, and then packed her kittens into carriers she had borrowed from the vet. She hadn’t told her mom they were coming, but she could hardly justify heating her house while she was gone, just for two cats. And she certainly wasn’t going to leave them there with no heat.

She made it to the ferry line the requisite thirty minutes early. She still didn’t understand why she had to be there so early, but people loved to tell tales of missing their ferry because they were only twenty-eight minutes early.

She was on the verge of tears while waiting in her car. She didn’t want to leave the island. She didn’t want to leave James. She was mad at herself for being so emotionally invested in such an emotionally distant man.
